One of the biggest benefits to owning an electric car is the flexibility. You can easily fuel up at a public station around Novato or even in your garage! But, are all electric car chargers the same? The answer is yes and no.
Electric car chargers are universal, which means most makes and models can use the same plugs at public charging stations. But there are three different types of electric car chargers that you’ll see around San Francisco: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. All differ in terms of energy usage and charging speed, so let’s find out more about them.
There are different types of electric car chargers found around Mill Valley, and different types of electric car chargers found in the home. All will effectively recharge your batteries, but your charging speeds are greatly affected by the type of charger you choose. Let’s go over the options:
Level 1 chargers have a charging speed of 3 to 5 miles per hour. This is the slowest form of charging, but also the easiest to access. Your car will come with a Level 1 charging cable that you can simply plug into the wall. For a plug-in hybrid, you can probably achieve a full battery overnight with a Level 1 connection. But if you have an electric vehicle, your battery size is much bigger, and charging a battery from 0% to 100% will take days.
Level 2 charging can add anywhere from 12 to 80 miles to your EV per hour. Level 2 is probably the most common option you’ll see around San Rafael. Not only is it the most common option at public charging stations, but you can also install a Level 2 charging station in your garage! This gives you access to much faster charging speeds without leaving the house, but your home station must be professionally installed by a licensed electrician.
Level 3 charging is the fastest of them all, with a charging speed of 3 to 20 miles per minute. That’s because Level 1 and 2 chargers use an alternating current, while Level 3 chargers use a stronger direct current. This higher voltage can only be accessed in commercial spaces, which is why you’ll often see Level 3 chargers out and about – but never in a home.
Now that you have an answer to “Are all electric car chargers the same?” it’s time to see how an EV can transform your Novato drive.
