But there are three different types of electric car chargers that you’ll see around San Francisco: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. But if you have an electric vehicle, your battery size is much bigger, and charging a battery from 0% to 100% will take days.
Level 2 charging can add anywhere from 12 to 80 miles to your EV per hour. Level 2 is probably the most common option you’ll see around San Rafael. Not only is it the most common option at public charging stations, but you can also install a Level 2 charging station in your garage! This gives you access to much faster charging speeds without leaving the house, but your home station must be professionally installed by a licensed electrician.
Level 3 charging is the fastest of them all, with a charging speed of 3 to 20 miles per minute. That’s because Level 1 and 2 chargers use an alternating current, while Level 3 chargers use a stronger direct current. This higher voltage can only be accessed in commercial spaces, which is why you’ll often see Level 3 chargers out and about – but never in a home.
